Now that E3 is running, we have a new trailer and some gameplay has been shown. Supergirl, Atrocitus, and Gorilla Grodd have been added. We see the return of Aquaman and Batman, though they were both in the initial teaser. Superman is free from the containment in Red Solar Radiation he was stowed away in at the end of the last game takes a lot of prominence. A return of the crazy scene transitions during the fights themselves with some familiar locations mixed in with the new ones they’ve added. The armors seem to be upgradable, and perks from defeating enemies if the overlay of variations signifies that. Some actual gameplay footage shows drop percentages, so it seems that more difficult battle can offer some promising rewards.
We finally get the trailer showcasing in-game footage, and it doesn’t disappoint. They know how to play up the mythology, since Supergirl’s intro is her switching from civilian garb to her costume at super speed. We see Spectacular specials are back in the game again, and just seeing Atrocitus release the Butcher at Superman makes my heart explode in Red Lanterny goodness. We also see the levels full of character nods since Black Manta and some giant aquatic creature are in the Atlantis stage. The last game was the tip of the iceberg, and it will be interesting to see what faces show up. Dex-Starr makes a cameo so I’d say this is DC Nirvana for me, and it shows characters might not be alone in gameplay. Any extra lanterns would be appreciated, since the Green Lantern Corp and affiliated titles have always been my favorites. Away from the fanboy in me going wild, here is the trailer.
We got some of the first info on the game during the Mortal Kombat X Finals, but now we have a lot more to see. It seems to choose a level in multiplayer, it might actually be a mini fight of some kind since in some gameplay we see Atrocitus and Supergirl using their breath attacks against one another. Dex-Starr seems to float in the match, acting as an assist character of sorts. From there we also see Batman, Superman, Aquaman and Grodd in various matches. It seems that much like MKX, characters will have some impressive pre-round banter amongst themselves. If Grodd and Superman talking about world conquest is an indication, the dark humor of this series will be amusing to see. The returning characters seem very similar to the last game, however that just means we will likely see some unexpected surprises in some way or another.
They aren’t elaborating on the story much yet, but since it was played as an alternate universe storyline in the first game, this universe will finally be given a chance to shine on its own outside of the Injustice comics. The comics themselves are incredible, and really do flesh out the entire early story bringing in characters from across the DC Universe together for better and mostly for worse. They are a great primer for the Injustice franchise. I will admit, the characters from Injustice did pop up in the 2015 summer event Convergence from DC Comics. As a multiverse story, they did actually start the event showcasing the cast from a universe similar to Injustice. Of course, the fact that it shows just how remorseless and detached Superman is where he could see and hear the masses as the remnants of their world is being devoured by lava shows just how far gone this particular archetype is and when we do see his escape we will see just what kind of havoc he will reek out onto the world now.
There is a lot to look forward to, and look for us to keep you informed as we learn more.
