Persona 5, a long wait to hear anything about it but now we have a few confirmed facts. It will be released on both Playstation 3 as well as Playstation 4 as we have known, but now we have a release date to go with that. It is set for February 14th, 2017. The game centers around a group of high school students (which is a mainstay of the persona games by the way) who lead dual lives as both troubled students and “Phantom Thieves”. Instead of the Midnight Hour sittuation or jumping into a static filled TV you instead jump directly into the hearts of people. The theme of the game is ones “Self” and how both the literal and metaphorical masks ones wear hide that, and that stripping them away allow someones inner existance to be seen. Of course, the spunky group decides to help others and uncover the world behind society’s masks.
A great deal of the phantom game gameplay we see is tied to a realm known as the “Palace”, which is a region born of the coalesced corruption present from many adults. Of course, this brings up the greater theme of being a slave and seeking freedom as seen in a some of the promotional material.
First, the User Interface in battles have been overhauled which the staff is proud of. We actually got to see a little of the gameplay, that after entering the Palace, of which there may be several distinct iterations, there are wandering enemies that in a more stealthy way can be literally jumped allowing for advantages in the battle that follows like being first in the battle order and some earlier damage. There have been teasers showing off several minigames, and we also see cellphones being used to interact with other characters as well called the SNS system. As for the nitty gritty of the social gameplay, we see a new cooperation system that works like social links did in the last two entries. So essentially, you build a repertoire with people around the city for aid later on. We see that the school is a hub much like it has been in previous titles, including shops.
We also get a look at several areas outside the school and Palace showing a variety of characters, shops and plenty of sidequests and mundane tasks to carry out. The cat being carried around in the gameplay trailer turns into a Phantom Thief in the other world, but also gives seems to give constant advise in the game itself proper as well. We also see that the calendar is important still as we see that there are various planned out events amongst the friends in the game, and likely a bunch of content that will be date dependent that will crop up as well. And of course, at the end of the E3 trailer we have for you here, we see Igor show up in the Velvet Room. Some things never change.
